The blurb:

When Eleanor Harper becomes the director of a renowned artists’ retreat, she knows nothing of Cliffside Manor’s dark past as a tuberculosis sanatorium, a “waiting room for death.” After years of covering murder and violence as a crime reporter, Eleanor hopes that being around artists and writers in this new job will be a peaceful retreat for her as much as for them.

But from her first fog-filled moments on the manor’s grounds, Eleanor is seized by a sense of impending doom and realizes there’s more to the institution than its reputation of being a haven for creativity. After the arrival of the new fellows―including the intriguing, handsome photographer Richard Banks―she begins to suspect that her predecessor chose the group with a dangerous purpose in mind. As the chilling mysteries of Cliffside Manor unravel and the eerie sins of the past are exposed, Eleanor must fight to save the fellows—and herself—from sinister forces.

The Fate of Mercy Alban | Thursday Reads

“The Fate of Mercy Alban” by Wendy Webb

Grace Alban, along with her daughter, returns to her childhood home, which she has avoided for 20 years, due to her mother’s death. Long-buried family secrets return to the surface including old love letters and a lost manuscript that could lead to solving the mystery that surrounds a decades-old scandalous party.

So this one doesn’t involve a haunted house, but it involves a house with secret passageways. What fun! I’ve always wanted to live in a house that had a secret room.

If you haven’t read Wendy Webb yet, you should definitely pick up one of her books. I love her writing style and I have fallen in love with the stories and characters in each of her books. And they have surprise twists at the end. Her books are quick reads too. I averaged 2-3 days for each.

The Tale of Halcyon Crane | Thursday Reads

“The Tale of Halcyon Crane” by Wendy Webb

So after reading Wendy Webb’s “The Vanishing” I fell in love with her writing style and purchased her other books: “The Tale of Halcyon Crane” & “The Fate of Mercy Alban”.

In “The Tale of Halcyon Crane” Hallie (Halcyon) James receives a letter notifying that her supposedly deceased mother, Madlyn, just passed away. Then her father, who has been battling Alzheimer’s passes away. So, she heads to a remote island in the middle of the Great Lakes where she realizes her family’s dark secrets and the history of the strange community of the island.

I loved this. And once again, it includes a haunter house, on a creepy remote island, with some strange characters. What’s not to love about it???

The Vanishing | Thursday Reads

“The Vanishing” by Wendy Webb

I can’t remember exactly why I asked for this book for Christmas, I believe I found it recommended somewhere, but after reading the synopsis, I was very intrigued.

I finally got around to getting this one read a few weeks ago, and I have fallen in love with it and with Wendy Webb (I just recently purchased her other 2 novels “The Tale of Halcyon Crane” and “The Fate of Mercy Alban”).

“The Vanishing” is centered around a haunted house (I LOVE haunted houses!!!!) Julia Bishop’s life is falling apart when a stranger appears on her doorstep with a job offer – to become a companion to his elderly mother, whom happens to be the famous horror novelist Amaris Sinclair (who is presumed dead). Julia accepts the offer and heads to Havenwood, where mysteries and secrets haunt the halls and the forest beyond.

This novel is full of twists and turns, with a surprise ending, in which I never guessed!

[Side note: after finishing this book, it helped inspire me to pick the current writing project that I am working on, and to take it into a different direction in which I was initially going to take it.]
